Pink Topaz Gemstones

How Is Pink Topaz Produced. Important Information.

We recently heard a story, a sad story as far as the innocent buyer was concerned. A lady purchased a 14k pink topaz ring, the ring was absolutely stunning despite the simple design. The pink topaz gem was a large 14x10mm oval beauty, held firmly by 4 prongs on the yellow gold ring. The ring and mainly the pink color topaz stone was the talk of the town. A few months after the purchase, the lady decided that the ring design could have been much better. Basically the feeling was that, the design did not do full justice to the beauty of the pink gem.

She took the ring to her local jeweler and discussed various design options. The jeweler luckily had a ready 14k white gold mounting of the selected design. The gem size however needed to be altered very slightly to allow a snug fit into the mounting. The jeweler cut the stone and the problems began right away, the pink topaz suddenly started to show white insides! On attempting to shape and polish the pink color topaz, it became increasingly clear that the stone was white (colorless) inside. The lady was shocked, angry and sad realizing that she had been 'cheated' by the jeweler who sold her the pink topaz gold ring.

The sadness could all have been avoided, had the jeweler selling the ring disclosed complete details to the buyer. Some relief could have been had if the jeweler making the new ring knew about the properties of this pink topaz stone. The buyer now had to bear all the loss, the stone was worth nothing after the recut and repolish. In this report we discuss about pink topaz gems in detail, not about availability or pricing but mainly about it's properties and the process used to produce them.

When you talked about a colored gem like amethyst, citrine, most blue topaz etc the color of the stone is throughout the gem. You can therefore recut, resize, reshape or even repolish the gem without a problem. But what if the color was not all through the gem but only on the outer skin (layer). The stone would get ruined and lose color if the out layer was damaged, recut or repolished. This is exactly what happens with the numerous 'pink' topaz gems that are used by the gems and jewelry industry today.

The pink topaz gems seen today are basically white topaz treated to change their color to pink. This might not seem strange since, this is also the way by which blue shades of topaz are produced. However there is an important difference between, most of the blue topaz and all of the pink topaz that is produced. Almost all gem and jewelry manufacturers whithold this important piece of information from buyers. Pink topaz is produced by a process referred to as 'vapor deposition', forget the technical details and here is a simple explanation. A piece of white topaz gem is cut to the required shape and size. The stone is then put through a process where a pink color is deposited on the surface of the gem. The depth to which this color penetrates into the stone will be a fraction of a millimeter.

99% of the recuts or repolishes done on gems will involve a depth that exceeds, the pink color layer on top of the white topaz. The moment this happens, the inner white topaz gets exposed in the portions where the pink layer was damaged or destroyed. All gems that are cut or recut need to be given a final polish, and this will take of the top layer of the gem stone. Keep this in mind and make sure that your jeweler is aware of this too. He might with good intentions, clean your ring and repolish the gem. If this gem is a pink topaz gem stone, you can bid it goodbye !.

If you remember the statements made in this report about blue topaz, you would notice a mention about 'most blue topaz' gems. When it comes to blue topaz, it is generally produced by using irradiation on white. This changes the color of the white topaz right through the stone, not just the surface. However there is a small proportion of blue topaz that is produced by vapor deposition. Such blue topaz will suffer the same drawbacks as the pink topaz gemstones being discussed in this report.

Suggestions: This is the most important part of our report on pink topaz stones, as it aims to protect and educate the buyer. Pink topaz gems are NOT very expensive, they should be in the same price range of swiss blue topaz or probably london blue topaz gems. In the world of gems, pink and red gems are able to pile a premium on the price tag, but this should not happen with treated pink topaz gemstones. White topaz itself is found in abundance even in sizes as large as 15mm to 20mm. So getting a large pink topaz that is basically a white topaz coated pink, is no big deal.

Remember that recut, repolish and even simple scratches on your pink topaz gem stone jewel can ruin the pink layer on top. This would make the gem look quite patchy and shabby. Logically, a large gem is more likely to hit against hard objects and get scratched. So do not overdo the big gem act when choosing a pink topaz stone or jewel. The modest price tag might, tempt you to go for the largest pink topaz gem stone that is within your budget.

If you were looking for a pink stone and stumbled upon a pink topaz gem, it is quite likely that you had no idea about other pink color gem stones. Let us do a quick spin about other pink gemstone options. Pink tourmaline is one choice, available in various shades of pink and some of these can come very close to the color of pink topaz. It will cost you more than pink topaz but has good durability and color stability. Pink sapphire is obviously the prime choice for a pink stone if you can budget for it. Good hardness and stability come naturally to this gem but, sizes above one carat can get quite pricey. Pink morganite is a variety of beryl, good on color stability and sturdy too. However the color of morganite is a pale pink color, and saturated pink is almost absent in this gem. If you have heard of Kunzite, then be aware of something important. This gem can come in some tantalizing shades of pink but, the color will fade in time! You might be better off with a pink topaz, where color problems will throw up only if the gem is physically altered.

Is Kaisilver?

Having established itself as the world's leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited inventories, this reduces buyer options. Another problem with these small dealers is the lack of information and reliability when it comes to gem authenticity and value for money. Kaisilver with it's wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. With a support team that is compromised of jewelry and gemstone experts, the advice and suggestions made by the team relate to your requirements and not to fixed sales targets. The website shows a small sampling of the gems that we offer. You can infact request for just about any gem on the globe. All gems are sourced directly from the source, closely inspected and then custom cut by our expert cutters. With a buyer base that includes fashion models, government officials, casino and resort owners, lawyers, financial experts, students and professors, doctors and surgeons, sportsmen and newsreaders we have become the preferred choice for quality gems and jewelry. By cutting out middlemen commissions and multiple agents, we provide great value for your money. Our large online operation does not stop us from welcoming even the smallest order. Gold and silver jewelry is custom made with equal attention to quality, material and craftsmanship. You can choose from our designs or send us detailed for the style and design that you need.

How To Order?

The process to order gems and custom jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to payments we offer some very suitable options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment, it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller. We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away from them. There have always been fears of processing payments through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel comfortable using it. Shipping is done through FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5 weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment. Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed for each specific order.
